A Legacy of Quilting
As a young girl, I was taught the art of quilting by my grandmothers and great-grandmothers from the mountains of northeast Georgia. As they were sharecroppers and mountain women, quilting wasn’t a hobby - these items were needed for every day use. They took incredible care and pride in their creations.
My Grandmothers and Great-Grandmothers taught me the foundation of quilting, how to select materials, and techniques to the make designs my own. I spent summer evenings with them in fellowship and service making quilts. My mother carried on this tradition creating incredibly artistic ones with applique and satin binding. As I continue the same, I also love quilts using repurposed clothing, high quality 100% cotton, and ones created with textured materials.
I learned to read patterns. Moving from taking a pile of fabric and sewing it into a functional item, I studied the patterns of others. I would take elements and apply them to my style of quilting. I enjoy not just the craft, but the math and science behind quilting’s art form.
Quilting has been a part of me my entire life. After completing my enlistment in the USAF, I began making quilts for my own children. Then family, friends… and community events.
I do my best to carry on this tradition, and am proud to share The Quilter’s Mercantile with you.
